The Red Supergiant Content of M31 and M33

چکیده

We identify red supergiants (RSGs) in our spiral neighbors M31 and M33 using near-IR (NIR) photometry complete to a luminosity limit of log L/Lo=4.0. Our archival survey data cover 5 deg^2 M31, 3 for M33, are likely spatially these massive stars. Gaia is used remove foreground stars, after which the RSGs can be separated from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars color-magnitude diagram. The derive effective temperatures bolometric luminosities via MARCS stellar atmosphere models. resulting H-R diagrams show superb agreement with evolutionary tracks Geneva group. census includes 6400 2850 within their Holmberg radii; by contrast, only few hundred known so far Milky Way. catalog serves as basis study RSG binary frequency being published separately, well future studies relating evolution Here we use matches between NIR-selected optical counterparts that apparent similarity reddening OB result Malmquist bias; average extinction higher than M33. As expected, distribution follows arms, while much older AGB population more uniformly spread across each galaxy's disk.

The Red Supergiant Content of M31

We investigate the red supergiant (RSG) population of M31, obtaining the radial velocities of 255 stars. These data substantiate membership of our photometrically selected sample, demonstrating that Galactic foreground stars and extragalactic RSGs can be distinguished on the basis of B−V, V−Rtwo-color diagrams. In addition, we use these spectra to measure effective temperatures and assign ...

A Runaway Red Supergiant in M31

A significant percentage of OB stars are runaways, so we can expect a similar percentage of their evolved descendants to also be runaways. However, recognizing such stars presents its own set of challenges, as these older, more evolved stars will have drifted farther from their birthplace, and thus their velocities might not be obviously peculiar. Several Galactic red supergiants (RSGs) have be...

The Star Formation Histories of the M31 and M33 Spheroids

I review the observational constraints on the star formation histories in the spheroids of M33 and M31, the other two spiral galaxies in the Local Group. M33 does not possess a traditional bulge; instead, it has a small nuclear region hosting stars with a wide range of ages. The star formation history of the M33 halo is poorly constrained, but composite spectra of its halo globular clusters imp...

Comparing Giant Molecular Clouds in M31, M33 & the Milky Way

We present new observations of a 2 field in the north-eastern spiral arm of M31. In the 0.8 × 3.6 kpc mosaicked region, we have detected six distinct, large complexes of molecular gas, most of which lie along the spiral arm dust lane or in the vicinity of HII regions. The mean properties of these complexes are as follows: D∼57±13 pc, ∆V∼ 6.5±1.2 km s, MCO∼3.0±1.6 ×10 5 M⊙, peak brightness tempe...
